This powerful image encapsulates the grandeur of the Simpson Desert. The strong vertical lines of the dune contrast with the stunning graduated colours of the evening sky. I shot right on sunset to give me the shadows in the ridges of the dune otherwise unnoticed during the day. The clarity and detail of this image is unsurpassed, evident in the appearance of the lizard tracks in the foreground. As I knelt on the desert floor, I was at the foot of an endless ascending staircase of sand.
